Fresh Bucks Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is Fresh Bucks?
A. Fresh Bucks allows you to purchase double the amount of Indiana-grown produce using your SNAP dollars.

Q. How do I use Fresh Bucks?
-Find the market’s information booth.
-Tell them how much you would like to spend, then swipe your Hoosier Works card.
– Fresh Bucks will match up to $20 of what you plan to spend.
-You will get tokens to spend around the market.

Q. Do I get Fresh Bucks loaded onto my Hoosier Works card?
A. No.  You must have a balance on your Hoosier Works card in order to receive Fresh Bucks tokens when you arrive at the participating farmers’ market.

Q. What can I buy with Fresh Bucks?
A. Fresh Bucks can be used to purchase Indiana-grown fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices, tree nuts, and seedlings for edible plants.

Q. What vendor booths will accept Fresh Bucks?
A. Fresh Bucks can be used to purchase any eligible product at the market.  Look for the Fresh Bucks signs or just ask the vendor if they will accept them.

Q. Can I only spend $20 at the market?
A. No, you are welcome to spend as much or as a little as you like of your SNAP dollars, however we can only match up to $20 of what you spend.

Q. Where can I use Fresh Bucks? Which markets participate?
A. Check out the locations page for participating markets hours and locations.

Q. How often can I use the Fresh Bucks program?
A. You can receive Fresh Bucks each week that you go to a market.  You do not need to go to the same market each week; however, we ask that you spend all tokens at the market from where you received them.

Q. What if I have extra Fresh Bucks left over?
A. Your Fresh Bucks tokens are valid throughout the market season. You may use them at the same market on a different day.

Q. Will Fresh Bucks be available all season?
A. Yes,Fresh Bucks will be available at participating markets through their season.

Q. Do the farmers’ get paid?
A. Yes, the farmers turn in their Fresh Bucks tokens and get reimbursed for the full amount.

Q. Can I buy meat, eggs, bread, jams, relishes, or dairy products with my Fresh Bucks?
A. No, you can only purchase edible mushrooms, fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, herbs, spices, seeds and seedlings for edible plants with your Fresh Bucks tokens; however, the SNAP tokens that you receive can be spent on any SNAP eligible products.

Q. Why do I get two different kinds of tokens?
A.  We need to be able to track how many Fresh Bucks are spent in order to reimburse the farmers and for grant purposes. Having the separate token helps with this process.
