Fresh Bucks purchases produce from farmers during COVID – 19

Fresh Bucks has been impacted by COVID – 19 with the closure of the winter farmers markets in Indianapolis. Since the program can not operate as it traditionally does, the Marion County Public Health Department partnered with Growing Places Indy to allocated some of the funds provided by IU Health to work on a new initiative during this pandemic. This new project directly purchases produce from approved Fresh Bucks farmers/growers and provides it to partnering organizations who serve high risk populations. We have successfully delivered fresh produce such as kale, collards, tomatoes, mushrooms, scallions, lettuce, and spinach to the Community Alliance for the Far Eastside and St. Clair Senior Apartments (NEAR). As supply increases we hope to partner with more organizations to continue providing healthier foods to these communities while supporting our local farmers/growers.

Fresh Bucks and Produce Rx is made possible with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) Program.  The Marion County Public Health Department, Chronic Disease Department is the central administrator of Fresh Bucks and Produce Rx.
